@Sylphox while I agree with the general sentiment that the static linking popularity is misplaced, the security issues are overblown. Not because it's not secure, but that relying on the ugradability of libraries for security is little more than lipstick on the proverbial pig.

The problem is the lack of security isolation in Linux. I wrote a longer post on this topic already if anyone is interested in my opinion on this:
